Find out if rhinoplasty and other cosmetic surgery can improve self esteem and quality of life.
A recent meta-analysis study out of the University of Pennsylvania involved a literature review of studies that looked at the impact of facial plastic surgery procedures (surgeries and non-invasive in office treatments) on self esteem and quality of life.
From HealthCanal.com:
Limited research does suggest that a number of psychosocial areas improve after patients undergo facial cosmetic procedures.... For surgical facial cosmetic procedures such as face lifts or nose jobs, quality of life and self esteem improved. The single study that investigated a non-surgical procedure revealed an increase in self-esteem and quality of life after botulinum toxin injections. And in the only study to look at a procedure-specific impact on body image, nose jobs significantly improved body image.
In my own practice I have found cosmetic surgery to have a positive impact on my patients' self esteem and quality of life. In fact, this is one of the most satisfying parts of my job.
Another area this research doesn't touch upon is the functional benefits of surgery, especially with regard to nasal breathing.
